There was a time when we had to keep telling a building what to do. Turn on the lights. Turn on the heating, etc.

Then buildings got smarter and could turn on the lights when it got dark. Turn on the heating when it got cold, etc.

Then buildings got even smarter and could analyse data over time to spot patterns and identify trends. They could optimise how, when and why we use lighting and heating based on occupancy patterns, energy tariffs, weather forecast, etc.

The fact is that most buildings today with the amount of data they generate have the potential to be incredibly smart. They just need to be able to collect, manage, analyse and act upon the right data to deliver the right business outcomes. i.e. improved energy efficiency, greater sustainability, enhanced tenant comfort and more.

Buildings today are now smart enough to also tell us what they need. What capabilities and solutions they need to deliver better business outcomes. This is because they can tell us how data is flowing through the building. They can tell us what capabilities they have but more importantly what capabilities they need in the form of equipment, systems and devices to better collect, manage, analyse and act on the data.

What does all this mean? Its means today you can tell a building its business priorities and it can tell you the optimal digital ecosystem to deliver on those priorities.
