Here is a simple but important consideration for building owners, occupiers or operators when choosing that next digital solution

Make sure to consider the data lifecycle. The data lifecycle?

The data lifecycle refers to the various stages that data goes through from its creation to its deletion or archival. It is used across various industries and disciplines to ensure data integrity, security and compliance. It can also be very helpful in understanding how data can be used to support better decision making and organisational objectives.

Applying the data lifecycle to a building is a useful way to understand how data is flowing through your building. Where is it generated? How is it collected? How is it analysed and how does it translate into actionable insights?

For example, there are many solutions available today that can predict occupancy patterns, energy consumption and even the optimal maintenance schedule for buildings. However any analysis and predictive algorithms will require data.

So, ask yourself a few questions first. Do we currently generate sufficient data? How do we collect the data? Is the data structured in the correct format? Where is the data stored? How do we translate any actionable insights into business results? etc.

There are of course other considerations to take into account when choosing your next digital solution but applying the data lifecycle can help you better understand the flow of data through your building and at least help you ask the right questions.

There was a time when we had to keep telling a building what to do. Turn on the lights. Turn on the heating, etc.

Then buildings got smarter and could turn on the lights when it got dark. Turn on the heating when it got cold, etc.

Then buildings got even smarter and could analyse data over time to spot patterns and identify trends. They could optimise how, when and why we use lighting and heating based on occupancy patterns, energy tariffs, weather forecast, etc.

The fact is that most buildings today with the amount of data they generate have the potential to be incredibly smart. They just need to be able to collect, manage, analyse and act upon the right data to deliver the right business outcomes. i.e. improved energy efficiency, greater sustainability, enhanced tenant comfort and more.

Buildings today are now smart enough to also tell us what they need. What capabilities and solutions they need to deliver better business outcomes. This is because they can tell us how data is flowing through the building. They can tell us what capabilities they have but more importantly what capabilities they need in the form of equipment, systems and devices to better collect, manage, analyse and act on the data.

What does all this mean? Its means today you can tell a building its business priorities and it can tell you the optimal digital ecosystem to deliver on those priorities.
